Embracing change, enriching lives

At Portway House, the past few months have been a powerful reflection of what truly defines a care home, not just the quality of its facilities, but the strength, adaptability, and compassion of the people within it. Through a period of change, the team has come together with remarkable resilience, ensuring that the high standards of care residents rely on have not only been maintained, but in many ways enhanced.

One of the most inspiring stories to emerge has been from within the housekeeping team. Following the departure of the Head Housekeeper, there was an understandable sense of transition, yet it quickly became an opportunity for growth. Sam, a dedicated and valued member of the team, stepped forward with confidence and genuine passion for her work. By putting herself forward for the role, she demonstrated both initiative and commitment, qualities that have proven invaluable. Her leadership has ensured that everything continues to run smoothly behind the scenes, and the transition has felt seamless for both residents and colleagues alike. It is a testament to her dedication that such an important shift has been handled with such ease and professionalism.

At the same time, Portway House has welcomed a new member to the team, Martin, who has joined as Maintenance Operative. From the moment he arrived, he has made a noticeable impact, quickly addressed tasks and ensuring that the home remains a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment. His efficiency has been matched by his warm and positive attitude, which has made him an instant and much appreciated addition to daily life at Portway House. It is often the combination of skill and personality that makes the greatest difference, and Martin brings both in abundance.

Beyond the team itself, there has been a renewed focus on enriching the daily lives of residents through meaningful activities that reflect their interests and personal histories. The introduction of both a book club and a baking club has brought a new sense of energy and engagement to the home, creating opportunities for connection, enjoyment, and rediscovery.

The book club, in particular, has had a profound impact on several residents who once had a deep love of reading but had gradually lost touch with it due to health challenges and cognitive decline. By creating a space where stories are read aloud and shared together, residents have been able to reconnect with something that once brought them great joy. There is something quietly powerful about storytelling, and its ability to spark memories, emotions, and conversation has been clearly felt.

Equally uplifting has been the success of the baking club, which has proven especially meaningful for one resident who had previously struggled with motivation to engage in activities. Baking had once been both a passion and a profession for her, and through this club she has rediscovered that sense of purpose and creativity. Watching her come alive again in the kitchen has been a joy for both staff and fellow residents. One particularly special moment came when she shared that she had once baked a cake for the Queen, a story that brought smiles, admiration, and a sense of pride to everyone who heard it.

Together, these moments reflect a wider shift within Portway House, where more residents are engaging in activities that truly resonate with them. This personalised approach is helping to enhance wellbeing, strengthen connections, and create a warm and positive atmosphere throughout the home. It is these everyday stories of care, initiative, and human connection that continue to define life at Portway House.
