Celebrating Care Day at Portway House with Ruth Omosighi
At Portway House, Care Day is a special moment to pause, reflect and celebrate the incredible people who dedicate their lives to supporting others. We are proud to shine a light on one of our night shift carers, Ruth Omosighi, who truly embodies the heart and soul of care.
Ruth has been part of the Portway House family for five years, and during that time she has become a familiar, reassuring presence to residents and colleagues alike. Her journey into care was deeply personal. After caring for her father, who lived with dementia, Ruth discovered her calling. That experience shaped the compassion, patience and empathy she brings into every shift. It inspired her to bring joy and light into the lives of others and to treat every resident as she would a loved one of her own.
"I just enjoy enriching my residents' lives with a smile, laughter, singing and dancing," Ruth shares. "It's especially lovely when they ask me to sing for them." Her warmth and positivity are often the highlight of someone's evening, turning ordinary moments into memories filled with comfort and connection.
Working nights may look different from daytime care, but Ruth explains that it is never quiet. "Working nights is the norm for me as I've always done it," she says. While the home is calmer, the need for attentive, compassionate support remains constant. Night time often brings its own challenges, from residents feeling unsettled or anxious, to moments when someone simply needs a familiar face nearby.
"I approach every shift with the same professionalism and commitment to provide the very best care I can," Ruth explains. "There are different needs at night. Reassurance, a calming presence and sometimes simply being there for someone. I love my job and I love the company, but most of all I love looking after our residents, it's in my nature."
Ruth's dedication to her role is clear in everything she does. She takes pride in creating a safe, caring environment where residents feel listened to, respected and valued, especially during the quiet hours when support matters most. Her gentle approach helps residents feel secure and cared for, even in moments of vulnerability.
With the new pathways for career progression at Portway House, Ruth's passion for care has been reignited even further. She is excited about continuing to grow in her role, develop new skills and deepen her impact on the lives of the people she supports. Her commitment to personal development reflects her commitment to delivering the highest standard of care.
This Care Day, we celebrate Ruth and every member of our care team who brings compassion, dedication and humanity into their work. People like Ruth remind us that care is not just a profession. It is a calling, a gift and a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of others, every single day and night.
