The importance of interactive days at Portway House

Here at Portway House, we like to encourage residents to get involved in many different activities and crafts, as we know it’s important to stimulate different parts of the brain and body where we can.

Interactive days can help to boost confidence and make residents feel more engaged with life.

This Saint David’s day our residents celebrated by crafting their very own paper daffodils. We use these activities as a chance to improve cognitive abilities and minimise stress and anxieties in a person.

On a daily basis, we use our fine motor skills to feed ourselves, get dressed and brush our teeth, whereas some of our residents may have a reduced ability using these skills, by implementing arts and crafts in our homes it helps to refine those skills giving our dear residents the sense of accomplishment and improved self-esteem.

Trying new activities as an older adult can have a lot of positive effects on a person, it can provide an opportunity to socialise with one another and build bonds between other residents and the staff members.

Crafting is something we deem very important at Portway House to relax the mind, body and soul and try to impose as much as we possibly can, as both caregivers and residents can enjoy this together.
